I like the effect of some of my year-2000 narrow-band-contrast camera pictures - like the picture above, but not so much the next picture (below). Still, this batch of photos from May 2000 show some of the ambiance of the time.

東海道線 2000年5月 - Tokaido Line - May 2000

It's hard to explain... maybe even impossible, but there was something magical about this generation of Tokaido Line trains. What I can say is that the combination of steel, glass, and (very important) good ventilation was (from the standpoint of the feeling of being on the train) vastly superior to the newer types of rolling stock. And then there was the magic factor... whatever it was.

2000年5月の秋葉原 - Akihabara in May 2000

Fifteen years isn't a particularly long time historically, but in ever-changing Tokyo, a fair amount has changed in the past fifteen years.

Akihabara has seen a lot of development, so people who know it well will see much that is different in this collection of photos from Tuesday, May 2nd, 2000.

More significant than structural changes (new buildings) however, is the way that Akihabara has gone from being an area primarily focused on electronics, to (increasingly) a sea of CosPlay cafes with female touts out in the street passing out flyers.

Personally, I didn't think much about that initially, but as I watch the shops that I like go out of business one by one, and the area of CosPlay cafes spread throughout the entire area, I've begun worrying about the future of Akihabara as an Electronics area.

Ah... here's an area that I knew wouldn't stay this way for long... these old buildings had a lot of character. When I went to this street last week (in November 2015) I only found one solitary old two-story building....
