1st-Gen Automatic Ticket Gates in Tokyo (2000)
The first generation of automatic ticket gates in Tokyo used magnetic cards - the IC chip type ticket cards came out later. As you can see in the above photo (taken while a machine was being serviced in May 2000) these first machines were very mechanically complicated.
